Climate

For our interstate and international couples, we’ve included a season guide for you if you aren’t too familiar with our tropical climate, to assist you with date selection.

Tropical Summer: December to February

Summers on Magnetic Island are marked with hot sunny days (average max 31°C) and wet and warm nights (average min 23°C). Some people get scared off because of the high amount of rainfall during these months, but take into consideration that the majority of the rain falls during the night or in late afternoon thunderstorms.

After a hot sunny day at one of the beaches or out on a glorious reef tour, it is a magnificent sight to watch these powerful storms form and the rainstorm associated with them is often a relief, leaving the next morning sunny and sparkling from the nourishment and hydration that the rainfall produced.

Tropical Autumn: March to May

Autumn in Magnetic Island is similar to tropical summer as it is green and vibrant but the temperature starts to dip slightly; hot clear days (average max 28°C) are followed by balmy nights (average min 19°C). The water temperatures are quite warm during these months and the visibility on the reef is spectacular.

Tropical Winter: June to August

There are not too many places in the world where you can sit comfortably in a swimsuit on the beach in the middle of winter. Magnetic Island’s tropical winter is warm, dry and pleasant. The daytime temperature is comfortable (average max 25°C) for any outdoor activities, be it a game of golf, horseback riding, fishing or reef tours, wildlife treks or enjoy some time out in a hammock under a tree.

The tropical winter nights can sometimes get cold enough for you to require a light jacket (average min 14°C). These cooler months are generally very busy in Magnetic Island since much of the southern parts of Australia are battling bitterly cold conditions.

Tropical Spring: September to November

Spring is a glorious time to visit Magnetic Island. With only slight changes in the temperatures (average max 28°C, average min 20°C), there is hardly any rainfall over this period. The island’s natural flora and fauna begins to blossom and animals begin to reproduce filling the bays of Magnetic Island with vibrant colours and the playful chatter of new life. The water temperature is absolutely perfect for a comfortable swim, jet-skiing, snorkel or scuba-dive.
